Averil was invited to address the Chicago chapter of Network of Executive Women for their fall learning event, and gave the keynote speech to a gathering of over 180 members drawn from all areas of Chicago’s retail sector, various corporations and international finance. NEW is a US based women’s leadership organisation operating across the USA & Canada, representing over 9000 members, 750 companies and supported by 100 corporate sponsors. On 23rd May, François was a panellist for a discussion at McGill University’s MBA NEXT 50 conference, in celebration of the MBA programme’s fiftieth year. Entitled ‘Loyalty Through the Eyes of Generations Y & Z’, the discussion explored the differences between these two generations and their predecessors as well as questioning how to build customer and employee loyalty for Millennials, who are tomorrow’s leaders. Optimists tend to have selective perception. (e.g. your partner is pregnant. Suddenly there are pregnant women everywhere, they were always there, they had no significance so you just didn’t notice). Optimists opt to see the good and minimise the time they spend thinking about the bad. Which means they get over difficulties faster because they don’t ruminate. Don’t keep running the movie in your head of how awful it was. Learn what you can from the experience and then work at forgetting it. Bad things happen. Get over it! Optimists are both happier and more successful. Learn selective perception/amnesia.
